Thymele (An Open-access Dynamic Multimedia Dictionary of the Performing Arts): Τhe National project, entitled Thymele, aims to conduct basic research in the field of Performance Studies, and particularly in the domains of the theory and terminology of Performance Studies. More specifically, the project aims to create a basic infrastructure tool, an innovative multimedia Dictionary, which will contribute towards the creation of a commonly accepted conceptual and interpretative framework for the Performing Arts, and the terms and concepts in common use in this field. The project will offer specially designed digital applications which allow the precise linguistic and formal expression of these terms and notions, their semantic interconnection, the highlighting of potential relationships between them, the recording of the argumentation and the rationale behind their gradual formation, as well as the location of primary and secondary material which could serve as documentation. At the same time, the project will promote the diffusion of knowledge on the subject of the Performing Arts in wider audiences. The system will take the form of an open access internet platform, which will offer dynamic multimedia content with crowd-sourcing features concerning the addition of material and the use of hypermedia. March 2024 - January 2026 https://www.iit.demokritos.gr/projects/thymeli/

reBook (Digital platform for republishing historical Greek books): National project (region of Attica) aiming at the development of a smart Digital Platform for re-publishing Historical Greek Books. The aim is to develop new techniques and methodologies for text recognition (mostly polytonic, modern and foreign-language) for scientific cultural heritage documentation, as well as reducing the time and cost of all relevant processes (digitization – documentation) related to the re-publishing of historical Greek Books in modern Greek language. Achieving the above goal will be done through a modern digital visualization and document management platform that will allow for the immediate, easy-to-use and user-friendly processed texts. August 2022 - August 2024 https://www.iit.demokritos.gr/projects/psifiaki-platforma-gia-tin-epanekdosi-istorikon-ellinikon-vivlion/

ShakeIT (Corpus-Assisted Drama Translation Research: Shakespeare In Translation): Novel Optical Character Recognition (OCR) techniques for polytonic handwritten and printed texts in order to assist the research project “Corpus-Assisted Drama Translation Research: Shakespeare In Translation – ShakeIT” of the University of Cyprus. Research goals: (a) the improvement of current Greek polytonic OCR state-of-the-art technologies by incorporating advanced image processing, pattern recognition, machine learning and deep neural network techniques into the OCR pipeline, (b) the creation of a state-of-the-art corpus for Greek Polytonic OCR that can be used by the research community for training and evaluation purposes. CULDILE (CULtural DImensions of deep LEarning): Greek GSRT funded project to develop an integrated expert system for capturing documents, enhancing images and understanding cultural documents. The capturing of an image as it is produced by a low cost scanner as well as pre-processing it, is the first stage of document processing aimed at improving scanned image quality and creating an excellent digital copy. In addition, improving the quality of a document image is a very important step because it helps to succeed in downstream processing such as fragmentation and recognition and is necessary due to the particular problems of quality and appearance of historical documents to be processed. Recognition and partition are key stages of document understanding and will assist a human expert during a cataloguing phase. The designation and identification of repeating elements such as: drop letters, dedicatory notes, typographic jewelry, titles, title decorations, character families, tables of contents and indices as well as locating the position of specific keywords that characterize the content of the documents or part of it will be automated. This will achieve a “world’s” unique application (software) that assists in the scientific documentation of cultural documents. July 18, 2018 - January 17, 2023 https://www.iit.demokritos.gr/projects/culdile/

READ (Recognition and Enrichment of Archival Documents) project: READ is a project funded by the European Commission (H2020-EU.1.4.1.3. - Development, deployment and operation of ICT-based e-infrastructures). The overall objective of READ is to implement a Virtual Research Environment where archivists, humanities scholars, computer scientists and volunteers are collaborating with the ultimate goal of boosting research, innovation, development and usage of cutting edge technology for the automated recognition, transcription, indexing and enrichment of handwritten archival documents. This Virtual Research Environment will not be built from the ground up, but will benefit from research, tools, data and resources generated in multiple national and EU funded research and development projects and provide a basis for sustaining the network and the technology in the future. Starting: 1/1/2016 Ending: 30/06/2019. https://read.transkribus.eu

OldDocPro (Novel Techniques to Advance the Frontiers of Old Greek Document Recognition): Greek GSRT funded project (call for Excellence II). A group of document image processing experts work together and focus their research efforts towards the recognition of Greek machine-printed and handwritten polytonic documents. Starting: 1/3/2014 Ending: 31/7/2015.http://www.iit.demokritos.gr/~bgat/OldDocPro

tranScriptorium project: a STREP project of the Seventh Framework Programme in the ICT for Learning and Access to Cultural Resources challenge. It aims to develop innovative, efficient and cost-effective solutions for the indexing, search and full transcription of historical handwritten document images, using modern, holistic Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) technology. Starting: 1/1/2013 Ending: 31/12/2015. http://transcriptorium.eu

IMPACT (Improving Access to Text) project: IMPACT is a project funded by the European Commission (FP7-ICT-2007-1, Digital libraries and technology-enhanced learning,  Large-scale integrating project - IP). It aims to significantly improve access to historical text and to take away the barriers that stand in the way of the mass digitization of the European cultural heritage. IMPACT as a network of centres of competence brings together fifteen national and regional libraries, research institutions and commercial suppliers. Starting: 1/1/2008 Ending: 31/12/2011. http://www.impact-project.eu/
